Concordia Voices, under the direction of S. Katherine Shealy, is a 50-voice mixed choir ranging from advanced high school singers to adults. This ensemble presents two concert series’ per performance year, which include a wide variety of compositions from myriad time periods, cultures, and genres. Past repertoire includes Frostiana (Randall Thompson), Five Hebrew Love Songs and Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine (Eric Whitacre), A Ceremony of Carols (Benjamin Britten), the Fauré Requiem, as well as selections by composers such as Victoria, Brahms, Orff, Copland, Barber, Ola Gjeilo, Dan Forrest and local composer David Bennett Thomas. In addition to standard choral repertoire and major works, the choir also performs traditional spirituals, folk songs, and contemporary a cappella pieces. Concordia Voices received the honor of being selected to perform at the American Choral Directors Association – PA Chapter’s Fall Conference at Susquehanna University on October 31st, 2015.
Ariana Women’s Choir and Orpheus Men’s Choir, directed by S. Katherine Shealy, are tandem choirs that rehearse and perform during the summer season. The two ensembles rehearse separately but simultaneously, and in addition to preparing separate programs, also prepare several mixed choir selections, culminating with a shared concert in mid-August. Repertoire for these ensembles include standard repertoire for women’s and men’s choirs, as well as contemporary a cappella arrangements such as Cells, Planets arranged by Vince Peterson of the King’s Singers and Timshel by Mumford and Sons. Ariana and Orpheus presented both a World Premiere (Loki performed by Orpheus Men’s Choir) and United States Premiere (Valkyrie performed by Ariana Women’s Choir) of compositions by Canadian composer Kristopher Fulton in 2015. Recently, the summer choirs have been exploring a capella music throughout history in small group format as first presented in the “Close Harmonies” program in 2017.
Outreach Ensembles, directed by Jennifer Wright, are formed for special events and performances throughout the community. In addition to performances for community service, musicians from Concordia Choral Arts are available for hire at ceremonies, functions, and events throughout Chester Co., Delaware Co., and the Main Line in a variety of formations and groupings (soloists, quartets/small groups, women’s voices, men’s voices, and full choir). Past performances include: Taste of Phoenixville Annual Gala, Steel City Coffeehouse Benefit, Uptown! Entertainment Alliance’s Annual Gala, A Longwood Gardens Christmas, West Chester Old Fashioned Christmas, West Chester Art Association, National Anthem at Philadelphia Phillies, Shannondell at Valley Forge Performance Center, Simpson Meadows, and Spring Mill retirement communities.
